Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth (CVV) is a deemed to be university under the 'de novo' category recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The university was established in 2016 by the Chinmaya Mission, a worldwide organisation founded by Swami Chinmayananda, and is located in Ernakulam, Kerala, India. It has its headquarters at the Chinmaya International Foundation (Adi Sankara Nilayam, Ernakulam) and has been established as a torchbearer for the preservation of India’s cultural heritage and knowledge traditions through higher education. Striking a careful balance between the old and new, the organisation offers advanced courses with unique electives, with an intent to mould the teenagers of today into well-rounded, responsible, value-grounded, young adults that contribute to the nation, and the world at large.

Founder

Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda is the Founder and former Chancellor of Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth, and the former head of Chinmaya Mission Worldwide. In his role as Founder, Swamiji saw the launch of the Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth as a logical extension of the Chinmaya Mission’s core role of teaching and sharing the wisdom of the Indian knowledge traditions. For over six decades, in the unique institution called the Sandeepany Sadhanalaya, Chinmaya Mission has focused on training students to become monks who undertake the larger role of spreading the message of Vedanta to society. Monks are trained formally in an intense two-year course of study in the traditional Gurukula mode. Sandeepany Sadhanalayas have existed outside the formal university system and enabled the Chinmaya Mission to sustain and carry the essence of the Upanishads across the world.

Building on sixty years of running over a hundred Chinmaya educational institutions—prestigious primary schools and secondary schools, as well as institutions of higher education—across the country, Swamiji was convinced that the time was right for a Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth, a university that blends Indian Knowledge Systems with Contemporary Knowledge Systems. With its focus on a niche area, Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth strives to bring excellence, subject matter expertise and an intense commitment to the higher purpose of nation building to tertiary education.
